Effect of Intravenous Oxytocin Pretreatment on the Incidence of Idiopathic Respiratory distress syndrome in fullterm newborns born after Cesarean section

Abstract
Idiopathic respiratory distress syndrome (IRDS) is the reslut of Inadequate ventilation of a lung due to deficiency of surf actant and occurs primarily in premature infants. But cesarean section, maternal diabetes or neonatal asphyxia are known to be associated with increased incidence of IRDS in full term infants.
The prevention of IRDS becomes important not only for premature infants but also for term infants with cesarean section.
This study is designed to investgate the incidence of IRDS in full terms delivered by cesarean section after intravenous oxytocin p.zetreatments compared to elective cesarean sections. Uncomplicated term pregnant women of five hundred and thirty-four were included in this study. 218 subjects who were stimulated with oxytocin before operations, 205 subjects who had cesarean section at the onset of labor and ill subjects who had cesarean section prior to onset of labor as control group. The result of our data shows that oxytocin treatm ents prior to sections significantly decreased the incidence of IRDS in full term infants (1. 4%) compared to untreated control group(6.3%, p<0.01).
Our data supports the finding that oxytocin pretreatment in cesarean .section may prevent IRDS in full term infants.
